Lakewood Knowledgebase Question:

I have a concern more than a question. I publish a small AMC "fanzine" and get lots of inquiries and questions about parts. I know Lakewood is FINALLY making an AMC manual trans scattershield again (Part number is Lakewood 15411). I'd like to know why Lakewood has decided to use a Chevy style scattershield with Muncie bolt pattern and depth. If this is not correct, please let me know what patterns and depth will be used. Most AMCers use the AMC six bell housing (same bolt pattern as V-8, 72 and later) and the Ford small block type transmission if they don't use an AMC T-10. Here is one of the messages I've received voicing concerns from a long time AMC racer: "Lakewood is finally making an AMC scattershield. However before everyone jumps to get one. The tranny bolt pattern they are using is G.M. Muncie. ????? Why???? DUH????? How many shifters are available to put a Muncie in an AMC???? How many late style Overdrive transmissions use a Muncie bolt pattern??? I fear Lakewood is building something no one wants nor can use. The Smart thing to do would be to use the FORD style bolt pattern which matches most all serious AMC transmissions. And it also matches the T5, the TREMEC, the Richmond 5 & 6 Speeds." If this is not the right contact, please forward to the correct party. Reply from Rep:

The reason is the aftermarket transmissions. The numbers would NEVER justify the cost of the tooling for such a small market for the OEM tranny. This was the ONLY way there would ever be a bellhousing for an AMC. If you would like to pay for the tooling and SFI certification tests the money would be greatly appreciated. We have over $100,00.00 in the cost of tooling so I hope now you understand why we chose to make it with the GM depth. There are very few stock and super stock racers that will use the old transmission, if you want to compete in those classes you will need to step up to the jerrico or be back fodder. I hope you and the rest of your AMC buddies will thank us for bringing the bellhousing. Don't kick the gift horse in the face. You all are real lucky we did it at all. Thanks
